Clinical Assessment Overview

The Clinical Assessment is the final stage of the Standard Assessment Pathway. It allows you to demonstrate your clinical skills and reasoning in a simulated environment with professional actors simulating real patients. You must pass all three compulsory components to receive your Final Certificate.

Important Update
The Standard Assessment Pathway will become the Australian Optometry Entry Pathway (APEP) in October 2025. Clinical Assessments will be replaced with Capability Assessment and Clinical Workshop.

Three Compulsory Components

You must demonstrate competency in all three areas of optometry practice. Each component is assessed separately and all must be passed to receive your Final Certificate.

Preparation Requirements

Essential Requirements

Professional Indemnity Insurance
Minimum $5 million coverage. Most candidates get insurance through Optometry Australia membership.
Clinical Assessment Information Booklet
Read thoroughly to understand competencies, domains, and assessment criteria.
Simulation Lab Equipment List
Familiarize yourself with available equipment and assessment tools.
Cultural Safety Training
Must be completed before Clinical Assessment. Valid for 2 years.

Special Circumstances

Pregnancy Considerations
If you are under 34 weeks pregnant, you must provide a medical practitioner's letter (dated no earlier than 1 week before assessment) confirming you are physically and medically fit to undertake the Clinical Assessments.
