Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about COE registration
Approximate historical OCANZ figures: Initial Assessment around $800, Written Exam around $1,500, Clinical Exam around $2,800, plus AHPRA registration. OCANZ and AHPRA fees are reviewed periodically — verify current figures directly with OCANZ at ocanz.org and AHPRA at ahpra.gov.au before relying on these numbers for budgeting.
OCANZ does not publish official headline pass rates as standalone figures. Approximate historical rates discussed publicly have been around 65-75% for the written exam and 60-70% for the clinical exam (first attempts), but these are not authoritative statistics — verify current figures directly with OCANZ at ocanz.org.
You cannot work as an optometrist until fully registered with AHPRA. However, you may work in other healthcare roles or as an optical dispenser while preparing.
The complete process typically takes 12-18 months, including credential assessment with OCANZ, exam preparation, and AHPRA registration.
